City and SANParks celebrates International Volunteer Day by recognising Cape Town’s environmental volunteers

Today, 5 December 2024, marks International Volunteer Day, the City and SANParks would like to thank all of the passionate environmental volunteers for their exemplary efforts to improve and maintain the beauty and healthy condition of Cape Town’s natural environment. The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, attended the volunteers appreciation event at the SANParks offices in Tokai last night, 4 December 2024, to thank the City’s key partners.
The volunteer appreciation day was well attended by representatives of various environment volunteer group representatives. The day kicked off with an alien invasive species hack in Tokai Park. This was followed by a guided walk led by Prof. Tony Rebelo From the Friends of Tokai Park who provided insights on the history and conservation of the arboretum and their current restoration project of Real Yellowwood trees.
This walk was followed by the appreciation event where there were speeches from the City and SANParks and the volunteers received awards.
One of the volunteers, Russell Hope, accepted a certificate of recognition for the Friends of Batavia Street Fynbos Area group. This group identified endangered species in the Batavia Street Fynbos area in Bothasig three years ago and has since achieved great success in removing all alien vegetation in the area and has planted beautiful fynbos plants, and sowed many protea seeds, which will beautify this space even more. The City would like to extend a huge thanks to the Bothasig community for their efforts and passion for this conservation project.
